A favourite escape of Istanbullus from chaos and crowd, Princes’ Islands are an archipelago located around 20 km south east of the city. It comprises nine islands, four of which are easily accessible by a public ferry. The main feature of this retreat is that no vehicle is allowed on any of the islands, except for police and rescue services. It's like going back in time, enjoying an afternoon stroll in the alleys of the villages, before exploring the natural beauty of the islands and ending the day with a swim and sunbath on one of the beaches. If moving on feet all day long feels too much, then the other possibility is to hire a bicycle to explore this beautiful stretch of land. Horse drawn carts are also available for the more romantic.
Given their easy accessibility, as Princes’ Islands can be quickly and cheaply reached by boat from both European and Asian sides, the archipelago gets quite crowded during the weekend. Come here on a weekday or early in the morning to enjoy the quietness that these islands have to offer. In summers, ferries are usually running from sunrise to midnight, and if you get late at night, there are a few accommodation options.
