Taksim Square

Taksim Square is the most well-known transportation hub and meeting point for Istanbullus. Occupying a huge area at one end of Istiklal Street, it's known mostly for its historical and cultural importance rather than its beauty. At the centre of the wide open field, arranged in a circular shape, stands the Republic Monument erected in 1928 to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the Republic of Turkey.
The square gained attention of the international media in recent years because of the ‘Occupy Taksim’ movement in 2013 after the demonstrations were held to preserve the close by Gezi Park. Interestingly, Taksim Square has always been a venue of violent demonstrations and repressions alike on sufferance over the centuries. Given its capacity to host hundreds of thousands of people at the same time, it is the perfect venue for public events, celebrations and entertainment.
