Most of the area has been designated as the Lake District National Park in 1951 and is the most visited national park in the United Kingdom. Apart from scenic beauty, the region is famous for its rich literary heritage and is closely associated with English literature of the 18th and 19th centuries. Renowned authors like William Wordsworth, Beatrix Potter, Robert Southey and W. G. Collingwood found inspiration in the captivating environs of the Lake District. Whether it is to simply unwind while soaking in the sheer beauty of the place or engage in adventurous treks among the mountains or explore the rich history and culture of the region, Lake District has a lot to offer for every kind of traveller. It is a great option for a family holiday as well.The best time to visit Lake District is in between April and September. The nearest airport to the Lake District is Manchester, which is well connected to major domestic as well as international cities. The region is also easily accessible by train. The West Coast mainline runs to the east of the Lake District, connecting Oxenholme, Penrith and Carlisle with major cities like London and Glasgow. There is also a direct train from Manchester to Windermere in Lake District. The towns of Ambleside, Windermere, Coniston and Keswick in Lake District are well connected by road.
