With its beautiful landscape, cool climate, and adventure activities, Manali is among the most visited cities of India. Being a favorite place for tourists, the city faces several problems related to excessive human presence, littering, and congestion. It may be noted that like any other tourist destination, Manali needs to manage these problems effectively in order to ensure continued prosperity of the area.
A video shared by Nikhil Saini on X (@iNikhilsaini) has quietly turned into a widely discussed moment online. The video filmed in Manali highlights how even newly installed equipment for tourists is being misused. In the video, the camera focuses on the newly installed charging unit meant to be used by tourists.
However, even at the time of posting the video, the charging unit had collected litter around it and even the charging unit was being used to dump waste.
However, it should not be forgotten that the reactions are not all in favor of those tourists who express annoyance towards what they call civic senselessness. There were people who wondered about the poor planning. And, again, it leads to the question that arises more and more often: is the fault in the way that people behave, or does it lie in poor city planning?
The story in this case is simple: the charging point was introduced in order to make the tourist experience more enjoyable in the area which attracts a lot of visitors throughout the year.
After all, the people who come to Manali rely on their smartphones to find out how to get around or book accommodation. At the same time, when such utility is used improperly right from the first time, it shows how fragile public infrastructure can become without everyone's contribution.
It would be hard not to recognize oneself watching this video. We all have seen benches being used for littering, views becoming garbage places, utility facilities becoming something else, which, obviously, takes place step by step.
This online exchange also reveals the bigger picture. It is not infrastructure alone that helps maintain any particular space, nor is it just about the behavior of the people who use them; one needs both aspects for maintaining clean and functioning public spaces. Lose either of them, and the balance is off.
In a city such as Manali, famous for its scenic location and serving as a gateway for millions of travelers, the importance of this issue is magnified even further. The influx of tourists, their expectations and their impact on public property become even more significant during every visit of the year.
The viral clip may fade from timelines soon, replaced by the next trending moment. But the issues it brings up are unlikely to lose relevance anytime soon. Because sometimes, it isn’t the event itself that counts, but rather its meaning.
