Menchukha is a small town situated at an altitude of 6000 feet in West Siang, about 190 kms from Aalo which is the district headquarters of West Siang. The Indo-Tibet border is 29 kms away from this town and Yorlung is the last inhabited village on the way. Menchukha is derived from three words namely Men (medicine), Chu (Water) and Kha (Ice) and it is believed that this medicinal land of water and ice was discovered by Guru Rinpoche for all the Tibetans. The Adi tribe also cohabitate in this region and the present landing facility is getting expanded for commercial flights to operate between Menchukha and Dibrugarh. There is a gurudwara hosted in a cave, about 17 kms away from Menchukha towards the Indo-Tibet border and considered to be a sacred place of worship. The lake Pasang Tso is another point of attraction here and the route to that lake goes through a trekking trail beyond the last check gate of the army or rather the zero point. Additional permit from the DC of Menchukha is required to do this trek. Many homestays are available for the weary souls and Geyboo’s Tourist lodge is one of the better options here. The higher echelons of this region resemble a cold desert area and as such the temperature drops below zero during the winter months of December and January. Last but not the least, Menchukha doles out as an amiable host for an adventure festival in the first week of November every year.
