Pangong to Tso Moriri: Exploring Ladakh’s most beautiful high-altitude lakes
Ladakh, a land of stark beauty and rugged terrain, is home to some of the highest and most stunning lakes in the world. These pristine water bodies, set against the backdrop of the Himalayas, offer breathtaking views and unique ecological diversity. If you happen to visit this beautiful destination this year, here are five high-altitude lakes that you must explore.
Pangong Lake
Pangong Tso, located at an altitude of approximately 4,225 m, is one of Ladakh’s most famous lakes. Stretching over 134 km from India into Tibet, its shimmering blue waters change hues throughout the day, ranging from turquoise to deep blue. The lake gained worldwide fame after featuring in Bollywood movies and is a major attraction for travelers. Camping by its shores, stargazing, and spotting migratory birds such as the bar-headed goose are some of the top activities here.
Tso Moriri
Situated at an elevation of 4,522 m, Tso Moriri is the largest high-altitude lake in Ladakh. Compared to Pangong Tso, it is less crowded and provides a more tranquil setting. Since the lake is a component of the Tso Moriri Wetland Conservation Reserve, it serves as a vital habitat for endangered species like black-necked cranes, Tibetan wolves, and the elusive snow leopard. The nearby Korzok village, one of the world’s highest settlements, adds a cultural charm to the visit.
Tso Kar
Known as the ‘White Lake’ due to its high salt content, Tso Kar is located at around 4,530 m in the Rupshu Valley. Unlike Pangong and Tso Moriri, Tso Kar has a unique ecological system since it combines freshwater and saltwater. The lake and surrounding marshes are a birdwatcher's dream, with birds such as black-necked cranes, great crested grebes, and Brahminy ducks frequenting the area.
Yaye Tso
Yaye Tso, one of Ladakh's lesser-known lakes, is thought to have been formed by volcanic activity and is located at a high elevation. Its arid mountains and deep blue lakes make for an unreal setting. Yaye Tso is a great place for people looking for peace and unspoiled beauty because of its distant location, which guarantees less tourists.
Kiagar Tso
Kiagar Tso, a small yet beautiful high-altitude lake, located on the way to Tso Moriri. Large grasslands encircle it, providing grazing areas for the Changpa herders and their animals. The lake is a great place to relax and take pictures because of its stunning blue waters that contrast with the dry mountains.
