Oral

Founded by Cossacks in 1613, Oral is a city influenced much by its Russian history. Technically, this city is in Europe and though Kazakhs outnumber Russians, the Russian population is still pretty large. Historically, Oral is very important in Russian history. During Catherine the Great’s reign, this was a city taken by the pretender-to-the-throne Pugachev during his rebellion. The famous Russian writer Pushkin later visited the city in order to write The History of Pugachev, so you’ll find a few buildings named after him. Oral is now an industrial and agricultural center, set at the confluence of the Chogan and Ural rivers, and a gateway for much of the rail traffic from Europe to Siberia.
Come for the beautiful traditional Russian architecture, such as the Christ the Savior Cathedral. The Russian Drama Theatre is likewise a beautiful building and active theatre. The Museum of Yemelyan Pugachev is an interesting spot to visit, a former house which played a key role in the Pugachev serf rebellion. Here, you’ll find Cossack artifacts, everything from cannons to presents from the Tsar. It’s a great way to get a glimpse into Cossack culture. For nightlife, check out the Golden Cat, a bar where locals and expats mix. Other than great food and great beer, this is also a place where you can listen to some jazz on a weekend. If you’re looking for some local cuisine, do not forget to check out Cum Cum and eat some ‘meat-on-a-stick.’ The Pushkin Hotel is a nice place to stay, with homely rooms and a view of the Ural River.
