Atyrau

Atyrau is one of the few cities in the world that straddles two continents. Located at the mouth of the Ural River, ‘Atyrau’ means “the place where the river flows into the sea.” Go to Atyrau for a taste of true Kazakh culture; unlike most cities in Kazakhstan, Atyrau is 90% Kazakh and its sites reflect the same. Atyrau has a relatively thriving economy—a rich oil city, it’s a hotspot for businessmen and boasts plenty of international restaurants and a thriving nightlife.
You can visit the Atyrau Art Gallery, which houses a collection of Kazakh paintings and modern art by local artists. Similarly, the Atyrau History Museum is a great place to learn about Kazakh culture, with fine examples of architecture and crafts specific to the Atyrau region. If you’re willing to venture outside of the city, head to Saraishyk, a village that stands over what was once an ancient city on the Silk Road.
