In a new development, the centre in India has now announced that the Delhi airport (Indira Gandhi International Airport) is going to continue its domestic operations amidst the lockdown in the city. This means that domestic flights to and from the Delhi airport will remain functional. However, the scheduled international flights are not permitted to operate from the airport, like all other airports in the country.
According to news reports, IndiGo, one of India’s domestic carriers had about 50 per cent of the domestic market share before the lockdown, and now it has reduced its capacity by 25 per cent until things get better. Airlines across the country are grounding their planes until things get better in the country and across the world.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation had earlier stated that scheduled passengers flights will not take off from abroad heading for India. The restrictions have been put in place from Sunday, March 22, 2020.
As of this morning, India has reported 415 coronavirus cases, and numerous cities have gone under a lockdown. On Sunday, March 22, 2020, Indians across the country observed Janta Curfew, which culminated in a round of applause from every corner of the nation at 5 PM. With these measures in place, India is looking forward to a crucial week, and is hoping to contain the spread of the disease any further.
