Neumünster Abbey

Neumünster Abbey is undoubtedly one of Luxembourg’s most important historical sites. The abbey boasts of a long and fraught history. Monks first built it in 1606 on the site of a Benedictine Abbey that was destroyed in 1542. Unfortunately this abbey was burnt down in a fire in 1684. While it was rebuilt as early as 1688, it was only after the French Revolution that the abbey’s future got intertwined with that of the city of Luxembourg. The Prussians used it both as a prison and a police station. The Nazis continued to use the abbey as a prison for political prisoners.
A long time has passed since then. Today the abbey has been refurbished and is used primarily as a cultural space. It hosts a number of commendable exhibitions and concerts. It’s best to check ahead of time, and book tickets for shows in advance. History and culture are embedded into the very walls of the abbey and there is no denying it. Once you’re inside the Neumünster Abbey you will find ghosts of the past everywhere you look. Definitely one to visit on your trip to Luxembourg!
