Nanjanagud

An otherwise nondescript town about 25 km South of Mysore, Nanjanagud is famous for its Nanjundeshwara Temple, which is dedicated to Shiva. Located on the banks of the river Kapila, the temple is a mix of architectural styles ranging from Gangas to the Vijayanagar Empire, though the last has left a lasting impression. The gopuram rises high into the sky and has a stunning array of stucco figures and sculptures depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. Like all Shiva temples, a huge Nandi (bull) in black stone dominates the front yard. The temple incidentally enjoyed the patronage of both Hindu kings and the father-son duo of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan, the former even making huge donations after his favourite elephant was cured after a visit to the temple. Apart from the temple, Nanjangud is also the location of Sadvaidyashala, a century old Ayurveda brand. Rasabale, a variety of short, plump, yellow-skinned bananas with distinct flavour is also grown here.
