Located atop a set of rocky hills, about 55 km north of Mysore, Melkote is a tiny little village which is home to the 12th century Cheluvarayaswami Temple. Adjacent to it is the Yogaranasimhaswamy Temple which is located on an adjoining hill top and the only approach is through a set of steep steps. By far, the Cheluvarayaswami Temple is the most popular featuring a beautiful gopuram, ornate pillars with stunning sculptures, and the sanctum sanctorum containing the lovely sculpted deity. The temple is also known for its delicious prasadam of puliogare and payasam. The Yoganarasimha Temple is much smaller but offers fabulous views of the area surrounding the temple. Behind the main temple is the Academy of Sanskrit Research, and many other ruined temples and structures. It includes the famous Raja Dwara which is a majestic gateway, though unfinished, featuring exquisite carvings of embellished elephants, assorted figures, and gods and goddesses.
