Located next to Giudecca Island, the San Giorgio Maggiore island is one of the most photographed sites around Venice, offering tourists with plenty of things to see and do.The most popular attraction in the island is the splendid San Giorgio Maggiore Monastery, which is a masterpiece of High Renaissance architecture and art. The San Maggiore Basilica also boasts priceless works of art. Renowned artists like Tintoretto, Carpaccio, Jacopo Bassano and Leandro Bassano have immortalised themselves with their paintings houses within Andrea Palladio’s architectural masterpiece. Deposition by Tintoretto, St. George and the Dragon by Carpaccio and Martyrdom of St. Lucy by Leandro are some of the famous works of art you can see here.
Another major attraction at San Giorgio Maggiore is Fondazione Giorgio Cini, a prestigious cultural institution that is situated within the former monastery. The foundation organises exhibitions and workshops related to music, theatre and art. The best way to see the place is by taking a guided tour (conducted in Italian, French and English) that will allow you to tour the whole complex including the three inner gardens, the refectory and the Longhena library.
