Mt. Kirkjufell

This little-known gem is located close to the town of Grundarfjörður in the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. The tiny town has less than 1000 inhabitants but we would suggest staying overnight just to observe Mt. Kirkjufell in all its glory at sunrise and at sunset. The mountain is 463 m above sea level and stands on a small peninsula of its own. The accompanying waterfall makes the setting seem like it has just stepped out of the pages of a fairy tale.
It is possible to hike to the top of the mountain in less than 2 hours but beware—the hike can be treacherous as it can get very windy in this part of the country. If you’re not hiking, stop at the waterfall overlooking Mt. Kirkjufell for a picnic. The mountain is picturesque in any season but it is especially spectacular in winter. The Northern Lights are frequently spotted over Mt. Kirkjufell and they make for quite the picture—one you won’t forget for a long time.
