The surreal landscape continues in the neighbouring Krafla Volcanic Zone. The highlight of this other-worldly area is the Viti Crater, which is home to a deep turquoise-coloured lake. Endless miles of barren volcanic landscape surround the lake. Free parking is available at the entrance and a 15-minute walk up a steep hill brings tourists to the top of the hill where they can admire the lake in its entirety. There are few tourists here, even in the peak season. Once you have stared at the stunning aquamarine-coloured lake to your heart’s content, you can walk around the crater, photographing it from every angle. You can also drive down to the surrounding geothermal areas where you will notice an abundance of boiling mud pools and steaming fumaroles.
