Miramar Beach

Miramar Beach lies on the confluence of river Mandovi and the Indian Ocean. It is flanked by eatery stalls and joy rides. Say hello to walkers and passer bys while relaxing at the shoreline, which was once known as Porta de Gaspar Dias. Fearing enemy invasions, the Portuguese built a fort here in the 16th century that remained under military service, suffering battles and fires until the 19th century. In later years, the remains of Fort Gaspar Dias were razed to the ground, thus making way for the current layout. The access to the beach is via a roundabout that is a meeting point for important roads such as Bandodkar Road and Dr. Jack de Sequeira Road. The junction features a temple and a bus terminal besides a monument depicting men holding a flame high and a canon that is pointed towards the ocean. This canon is said to be the only remnant of Fort Gaspar Dias.

Miramar beach is not known to be the best point to swim but is good for a leisurely walk. The huge tract of sand stretching from the traffic junction to the shoreline sometimes hosts public events too. On your way out from the beach, observe the brightly painted Maruti Temple against the backdrop of green palms and blue sky. In 1964, Rotary Club of Panaji has established a children's park at the entrance of the beach that is an additional attraction at this popular local beach.
