Merlion Park

The story behind Singapore's mythical mascot
Word to the wise: Although the original Merlion is located at the waterfront near the CBD, there are five more Merlion statues positioned throughout the city. See if you can spot all five.

Designed by Souvenir Committee member Fraser Brunner in 1964 as a logo for the Singapore Tourist Board, the tail of this imposing, 8.6m statue represents Singapore's roots as a fishing village; the head depicting the city's original name Singapura or "lion city". It's a boy—in case you were wondering.
Weighing in at 70 tonnes, the water-spitting creature is an interesting sight to behold. But therein lies the beauty of the Merlion, as Singapore itself is full of wonderful contradictions. Don't forget your camera—Merlion Park also offers great cityscape views across the water.
