Word to the wise: Whilst the mosque is open to non-Muslim visitors, the building is off-limits during prayer services so plan your visit accordingly.

The Masjid Sultan is a difficult building to miss. The golden domes of Singapore's most important place of worship for Muslims are the defining feature of the Kampong Glam area. The current Masjid Sultan—which means Sultan Mosque in Malay—only dates back to 1928, but stands on the same site as the original 1825 mosque that fell into disrepair during the turn of the 20th century.
Combining Islamic and Indian architecture, the current building is home to an enormous prayer hall, which can accommodate up to 5,000 worshippers, and is furnished with a beautiful carpet gifted by a Saudi prince. Don't forget to look up: the base of each onion dome is ornamented with glass bottle ends that the former sultan collected as donations from Muslims throughout the city.
