Maksimir Park is a public park in central Zagreb that can be reached in just 10 min tram ride from the centre. The thickly wooded 18 ha park was opened to the public in 1794. Landscaped in an English style garden with woods, meadows and lakes, it was the first public park in Southern Europe. The park is a favourite among locals who can be seen here strolling, jogging or sunbathing. The park gets filled with locals who are out on picnic during the weekends. Some of the finest Eastern European artists were instrumental in decorating the park with sculptures and sidewalks. The pavilion ‘Jeka’ (Echo) and a house called Švicarska kuća (Swiss House) are the highlights of this park. Take a time out for a stroll in this lush green patch to unwind. If you are travelling with kids, head to Zagreb’s Zoo where kids can be part of feeding session with the seals, sea lions and otters.
