Lucerne is one of the most popular cities in Switzerland, yet, it has very few characteristics of a city. The sky is as spotless as it could possibly get, the grass is greener and the sun somehow shines brighter. Falling in love is not very difficult as the many lakes, chapels, bridges and sculptures speak to you in a language that only a traveller can understand. It’s like Lucerne is almost human. It is charming and reclusive at the same time, except for the few quiet gestures of love in the form of the sanguine sunshine and soothing winds. This city has something for everyone, for the music and art enthusiasts and for those who like being in the vicinity of nature. With sights that were once ravaged by disastrous fires and rocks that are emblematic of pain induced by loss, this historical town is like a treasure chest, yet, it is humble despite possessing so many gems. The cottage-like houses with their bird baths and flawlessly symmetrical roofs and the cobbled streets take you back in time. Lucerne is a dream.
When in Lucerne, one cannot possibly miss visiting the Chapel Bridge and the Lion Monument and riding up to the peaks of Rigi, Pilatus and Titlis. With Zurich being the closest, regular Inter City/Inter Regio trains connect Lucerne to major Swiss cities. Make sure you are the proud owner of a Swiss pass in order to avail discounts and do check the Swiss Federal Railway website for tickets and timetables. While most of Lucerne is pedestrianized, city buses are frequent and cheap.
