Khardung La is hailed as the highest motorable pass (17,582 ft) in the world. While that claim has been challenged by some other newly-paved passes, it should be visited by ones with a penchant for striking off things from their bucket list. It lies north of Leh and is the entrance to Shyok and Nubra valleys. This pass is at some 39 km from Leh and attracts a lot of cycle and motorbike expeditions. Rapidly-changing sceneries on the route are the experiences of a lifetime. It’s advisable to get acclimatised to high altitude conditions before visiting this one, since oxygen content in air sees a rapid drop.
