The 17th century Jesuit Church or Jesuitenkirche is a Baroque masterpiece embellishing Lucerne and is located along the left bank of the Reuss river. Constructed by Father Christoph Vogler, it was the first large Baroque Church in Switzerland and continues to look as impressive as it did hundreds of years ago. While the vault of this religious site was redecorated sometime in the 18th century, the original garments of the Swiss Patron Brother Claus can still be found inside the inner chapel. The St. Aloysius reliquary and the Ignatius chapel of Jesuitenhirche are absolutely ornate, the ceiling frescoes of the Glory of Saint Francis Xavier are stunning to look at while the marbled nave and high altar are downright majestic. There is also a rather inconspicuous Pieta along with a main organ that was constructed by the Swiss ‘Metzler’ manufacturers around 1982. Standing directly across the Chapel Bridge, the interiors of this establishment are majorly white, rose and grey in colour and are pretty unique when compared to other churches in Europe. The Jesuit Church is an incredibly popular tourist attraction in Lucerne and also doubles up as a concert hall for organ recitals. Its religious importance has unfortunately diminished with the passage of time. Its elegance, however, is intact.
