Govt. to build massive zoological park in Gorakhpur to attract global tourists

Tourists will soon have another good attraction to look forward to during their visit to Gorakhpur city. According to the latest reports, the Uttar Pradesh Cabinet has sanctioned a proposal to allocate INR 234 crore for building a zoological garden, which shall be named after Shaheed Ashfaqullah Khan. The zoo will cover a massive area of more than 121 ac. Reportedly, a UP government spokesperson told the press that the objective was to lure tourists and improve employment opportunities for the local residents.
Another obvious objective of construction a zoological park is conservation of wildlife. Currently, Uttar Pradesh has two zoological gardens, one in Lucknow and the second in Kanpur.


The idea to build Shaheed Ashfaqullah Khand Zoological Garden was brought forward in 2008 - 2009. On behalf of the government, Cabinet Minister Srikant Sharma told the press that once this zoological garden is ready, Gorakhpur will turn into a tourist spot for a wider variety of visitors including international tourists.

Ashfaqullah Khan was a national freedom fighter, who was sentenced to death for the historic Kakori train robbery, also known as Kakori Kaand or the Kakori conspiracy of 1925. Ram Prasad Bismil, another associate of Khan, was also put to death by the British government for taking part in the same conspiracy.
