One of the oldest temples in Japan, the Horyu-ji is an important UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to some of the most treasured ancient structures in the country. With two designated precincts, the Western and the Eastern, this Buddhist religious site was established by Prince Shotoku. The Western precinct of Horyu-ji houses an impressive five-story pagoda along with an elaborate main hall, and a central gate that is guarded by two of the oldest, the most ferocious-looking statues in Japan. The exhibits inside the reconstructed main hall are of historical importance. The Eastern precinct on the other hand has an enchanting octagonal structure by the name of the ‘Hall of Visions’ which in turn houses a massive statue of the founding prince along with those of the Buddha. The Gallery of Temple Treasures has some brilliant Buddhist paintings and relics. The quaint Chuguji Temple with an entrance fee of its own is also a part of the temple complex.
