Meiji Shrine

Dedicated to the holy Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, the Meiji Shrine is a popular tourist spot in Tokyo and is a relaxing getaway from the otherwise bustling sights in the city. It was one of the structures to bear the brunt of the Second World War, and was completely destroyed by the bombings. However, it was rebuilt to look like the striking temple complex that it is today. At the entrance to the Meiji Shrine stands a colossal Torii gate and a peaceful Jingu forest forms its background. This Shinto shrine witnesses thousands of pious visitors on a daily basis, some offering their prayers inside the main hall while others write down their deepest wishes on traditional wooden plaques. A popular site for Shinto weddings, the Meiji Shrine also plays host to some million devotees during the New Year.

In order to have a more enriching experience, you can also explore the Meiji Jingu Treasure House, as it is a fabulous mirror reflecting the Meiji era, containing some intimate belongings of the Emperor and Empress. The admission fee is 500 Yen and it is open from 9 am to 4:30 pm. The Inner Garden, located within the shrine complex is also a nice place to stroll around, and you would have to pay an entrance fee for the same. The Meiji Shrine is a few metres away from the Harajuku Station, and is open from sunrise till sunset. Entrance is free.
