Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Minister for Civil Aviation P Ashok Gajapati Raju laid the foundation stone for the terminal. On this occasion, the chief minister said that the initiative will help boost the growth potential of the state, and also forge better economic ties with the South East Asian Nations. He added, “Transportation and connectivity are the two most important means for economic prosperity. Assam Government accords top priority to improve communication and engages in faster development of road, rail, and air linkages besides internet connectivity.”

As per reports, the new terminal building will spread across 90000 sq m, and will have potential to handle 3100 passengers during peak hours. Measures will also be taken to ensure that world-class facilities are offered to the passengers. Special attention will be given to the interiors so that they depict murals, local handicrafts, and popular tourist destinations of Assam.
The new terminal building will be further enhanced with 64 check-in counters, 8 immigration counters, 6 arrival carousels, 20 self check-in kiosks, 8 custom counters, 10 escalators, 20 aircraft parking bays, 16 self-baggage drop counters, and 25 elevators among others.
