Fruits of Kinnaur

Kinnaur can very well be called the fruit bowl of Himachal. Walking on any road or looking at any valley, all you see is fruit laden trees. While apple is the king of fruits in Himachal and the most orchards are apple orchards, it is not difficult to see the various varieties of plums, pears and apricots. Pears with their green and red color and apricots with their bright yellow tempt you at every turn. A particular variety of apricot is used to extract oil and we were constantly warned on stepping on these fallen apricots and you slip instantly. All the fruits that need the hilly climate to grow. If the fruits are not enough you see the dry fruits too growing on fruits. For someone living in the plains it is a sight to see the green almond and eat it while it is still raw and not dried to the hard. Walnut trees, that gives is not just the brain shaped nuts but also the shining wood for our furniture, can be seen in many backyards. When you look at the perfectly round green balls hanging in bunches on the walnut trees—it is hard to imagine the hardened but inside it that we often struggle to break. Pine nut or Chilgoza is another nut that grows in Kinnaur, you can see it hanging on Pine trees. Pine nuts and other dried fruits like apples and apricots can be easily bought at dry fruit shops of Rekong Peo.
