If you are following our list of suggestions, then you should be already in the right spot. In fact, the Fountain of Roma goddess is also located in Piazza del Popolo, below the Pincio terrace on the eastern end of the square. And it’s not the only one, since on the other side of the square, on the western hemicycle, the composition is balanced by the fountain of Neptune. Both were added during the new arrangement of the square carried out in the beginning of the 19th century. Valadier was the architect in charge of the work, and he not only planned the neoclassical square but also designed the statues, later sculpted by Giovanni Ceccarini in 1823.
At the centre of the composition of the eastern fountain is the Roma Goddess dressed as a soldier. Next to her sitting and leaning towards the centre are the two representations of the river Tiber and Aniene, depicted as adult men with long beard.
Of a smaller size compared to the rest of the composition is the she-wolf with Romolo and Remo, representing the foundation of Rome, standing at the feet of the central figure.
The water is collected in a shell-like basin at a lower level than the sculptural composition. It’s a colossal fountain reaching a considerable height, and attracting the gaze of the visitor towards the Pincio terrace.
