Danger to Iceland’s beauty due to rise in tourism

Iceland’s beauty is in danger due to over-tourism in the country. The government has announced a safety alert for the travellers to avoid some of the most popular destinations in Iceland, as they have overgrown the tolerance limit, and are now in grave danger.

The reason for the disaster is the growing number of tourists each year, and lack of monitoring, poor infrastructure, and custody of the area are in question.
Now to curb further damage and preserve the natural resources, the government is planning to set up limits for the number of tourists travelling to the locations, which are in danger.

According to the reports presented by Ministry for the Environment to the Parliament, limits are to be set for tourists, and certain areas that are in danger, to be off limits.

Though tourists can still enjoy the beauty of Iceland and explore the untouched areas around, as only certain areas have been marked to stay off-limits and rest of the avenues are still open for the tourists.


Environment Agency of Iceland has evaluated certain areas, which will remain protected due to their deplorable condition; Geysir and the Skógafoss waterfall seem to be in the worst condition.

Places like the Dverghamrar waterfalls and Gullfoss in the Golden Circle are also in grave danger.


A week ago, an incident became evident to the condition, the popular hiking trail to Reykjadalur was too damaged, and the government announced the warning for the travellers to avoid walking on the snow or ice bergs and closed the area due to the safety concerns.

To ensure good travelling experience for tourists’ government is planning to take the necessary steps to prevent and minimise the nature damage.

Moreover, the reports revealed that number of tourists coming to Iceland in the next few years is going to increase even more. Thus necessary steps taken by the government are in the favour of perseverance of Icelandic nature.
