Connaught Place, Delhi’s iconic spot, likely to turn into a car-free zone soon

Connaught Place (CP), Delhi’s iconic centre and market place, will soon turn into a car-free zone. Home to tons of eateries, shops, movie theatres, clubs, and the very popular Palika Bazaar, CP registers a huge footfall of tourists all around the year.

Since it is such a frequented place, steps are now being taken to make this popular Asian market pedestrian-friendly. Sources from the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) stated that the plan will be executed in two phases; both the phases will be implemented on weekends for a pilot run.
The officials also mentioned that the idea behind turning this iconic area into a car-free zone has been taken from New York and Paris. According to them, they have studied the redevelopment structures of big cities of the world and have tried to cultivate similar facilities here.
Further, disclosing the date of the pilot project, the NDMC officials mentioned that the first phase will be implemented from June 29 to 30, whereas the second phase will be launched on July 6 and 7.
Reportedly, this is the third time that the NDMC is attempting to make CP a car-free zone or pedestrian-friendly zone. The move is aimed to ensure that the beauty of this colonial-era structure is maintained.

As per the latest news reports, Union Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu met the NDMC officials, wherein it was officially announced that CP will be made pedestrian-friendly, and buses and cars will not be allowed in the inner and middle circle.
