If you were always intrigued by the character of Kargil town, here is a piece of good news for you. The J&K government has announced that the Kargil airport will be enhanced to be used as a full-fledged airport for commercial flight operations.
According to the news reports, the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with AAI will get signed by July, 15. By August end, the foundation stone for the expansion of the runway will be laid by the authorities in order to commence the development work.
Reportedly, the Governor’s Administration is eagerly looking forward to develop the Kargil Airport into a complete commercial airport for promoting tourism in Kargil. This would also help the local youth of Ladakh find employment opportunities for earning their livelihood just as in the case of Leh. The expansion of the airport will further help Kargil remain connected to other parts of J&K as well as the rest of India in the chilly winter months when the roads remain clogged with snow due to heavy snowfall.
Kargil has the headquarters in Ladakh’s Kargil district in Jammu and Kashmir. It is located 60 km from Drass, 204 km from Srinagar and 1,047 km from Delhi. Kargil is also the second largest town in Ladakh after Leh. The prominent sites in Kargil are Suru Valley, Mulbekh monastery, Nun Kun Mountain, Rangdum and Kargil Pensi La Lake.
