An ancient temple that overlooks a majestic valley in the Govardhanagiri range, Bheemeshwar is quiet, tranquil and serene, tucked away from the madness of civilization, traffic, hustle and bustle. Legend has it that this is a temple from the time of the Pandavas. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and a multi-step cascading waterfall (which mythology says was created when Arjuna shot an arrow into the rock face) by the temple enriches the visual experience. Located about 5 km away from the Kogar–Bhatkal road, a mud track, built just about 15 years ago leads up to the temple. The road is not motorable during the monsoon as a stream swells up and there is no bridge across. Driving on this mud road can be challenging, and in the monsoons, a 4x4 vehicle is a must. A priest living close by performs a morning and evening puja. Overlooking a vast valley, the setting is perfect for some reflective time or ‘me’ time. The summer can get hot and humid here. A dip in the stream nearby on a hot summer afternoon, and a snooze in the shade, some hot evening tea with the priest, and just gazing at the valley into endlessness—Bheemeshwar is a treat for those who seek quiet and solitude.
