Bahrain sinks a Boeing plane to create the world’s most extreme theme park

Bahrain is likely to top the list of having the most extreme theme parks in the world now. And what helped catapult its position to new heights is a vast underwater theme park, spanning around 100000 sqm off a Bahraini island city that features a sunken Boeing 747.

Bahrain has actually gone ahead to sink a Boeing 747 airplane to build a new vast underwater park. However, if you want to visit it, you will need to have a diving license. Set to open its doors this year in August, it is set to become the world’s largest underwater park. The sunken, decommissioned, specially-prepared aircraft will be the centrepiece for Bahrain’s new underwater attraction.
Locals, a fleet of tugboats, and international divers are making all the efforts to relocate the decommissioned jumbo jet to its new home in the Arabian Gulf.
Referring to this development, Zayed bin Rashid Al Zayani, Bahrain’s Minister of Industry Commerce and Tourism, said that the 70 m long aircraft is the largest ever to be submerged. This project is the result of a partnership between the Supreme Council for Environment, Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA) and the private sector.
To make sure that the aircraft is environment-friendly, the Dive Bahrain team has been working relentlessly for eight months. All the plastic and hazardous material have been removed; even the screws and bolts have been removed so that the entire oil residue could be cleaned before putting them on again.
Additionally, the dive site will be home to a 900 sqm replica pearl merchant house and sail structures, which will point to the nearby UNESCO-listed pearl beds.

With the opening of this underwater park, Bahrain is expecting to boost tourism and also provide researchers with the data and information on marine ecology in the region.
