Anegudde Vinayaka Temple

Located about 9 km south of Kundapur town, Anegudde Vinayaka Temple is dedicated to Lord Ganesha. About 100 km from Mangalore, the name of the town Anegudde is a combination of the two words ‘ane’ and ‘gudde’ meaning elephant and hillock respectively. According to legends, when this area was hit by famine and lack of rain, sage Agasthya performed yagya to appease the rain god. During this time, a demon named Kumbhasura started troubling the sages to disrupt their prayers. In order to defeat the demon, Bheemasena of the Pandavas prayed to Lord Ganesha and obtained a weapon to kill him. The name of the place Kumbashi, therefore, is derived from the name of the demon Kumbhasura.
The temple itself is highly revered in the area and attracts several devotees each day. The lord here is known as ‘Sarva Siddhi Pradaayaka’ which means the provider of boon and is believed to fulfil all the wishes of pilgrims. The ‘Mudi Akki Kadubu’ seva which is a special offering of steamed rice dumplings to the lord is considered highly sacred. The annual Rathostava or car festival held during the month of December is celebrated with great fervour and pomp.
