Kondakarla Ava, a popular lake and bird sanctuary, located 60 km from Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh, used to be a favourite picnic spot of the Vizianagaram kings and the British officers before India attained independence. As per the latest news reports, the Andhra Pradesh tourism department is getting ready to develop the area to transform it into a popular tourist destination in Visakhapatnam once more.
The lake covers an impressive area of 1,832 acres from Munagapaka to Atchutapuram mandals. The lake is a preferred hangout place for migratory birds, and several other exotic Indian avifaunal creatures. The presence of winged creatures makes this lake a good attraction for birdwatchers.
It is believed that the lake supports life across 21 villages in the state through Sarada River. The area around the lake is blessed with rich aquatic biodiversity such as lotus and other water plants. About 100 species of birds and 25 kinds of fishes dwells in and around the lake. The authorities have made arrangements for canoes crafted from palm tree logs.
To facilitate tourist activities in this area, the tourism department has made arrangements for a play area for kids and parking space for vehicles.
So, when to visit Kondakarla Ava Lake and sanctuary? Ideally, it would be best to visit in the cooler months between November and February if you wish to spot migratory birds. Also, the cool weather makes the place conducive for spending time by the banks of the lake.
