Allahabad Fort

Built by Emperor Akbar from the Mughal dynasty in 1583, Allahabad Fort is a stunning structure located on the banks of the Yamuna near its confluence with the Ganges. It is believed that Allahabad Fort is the largest fort built by the illustrious Mughal Emperor. The fact that the Archaeological Survey of India recognises it as an important monument of national importance adds more pull to its tourist value. The magnificence of medieval architecture is evident from the outer look of this massive fort. The outer walls of the Allahabad Fort rise above the level of water of the Yamuna river. Within the fort, one can locate the Jodhabai Palace (Jodhabai was Emperor Akbar’s wife) which is a fine mix of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles. The fort also covers Saraswati Kund, believed to be the origin of the mythical river Saraswati.
