7 coolest off-season wildlife adventures in India
When it comes to wildlife, it won’t be incorrect to say that India is more than tiger sightings. Yes, we love tigers and the season is coming to an end (June onwards, most of the major national parks in India will be shut for the season). Does that make us sad? Yes. Are we going to stop thinking about wildlife adventure till the nest tiger season (October-June)? No. And that’s because, India also offers a plethora of wildlife adventures that go beyond just tiger sightings. There’s bird watching, where thousands of migratory birds converge, creating a vibrant avian spectacle, hyenas, jackals and more, or go on boat cruises through dense mangrove forests. There are plenty of options for those who are looking.
Let’s take a look at some of the off-season wildlife adventure options in India.
Bird watching in Keoladeo National Park, Rajasthan
This UNESCO World Heritage site is a haven for bird watchers. It hosts thousands of migratory birds from all over the world, including the Siberian crane, pelicans, and various species of ducks and geese. It is great throughout the year but simply breathtaking in winters.
Wildlife cruises in the Sundarbans, West Bengal
Navigate through the world's largest mangrove forest on a boat cruise, where you can spot Bengal tigers, saltwater crocodiles, and various bird species. The waterways offer a unique vantage point for viewing wildlife in their natural habitat. If humidity doesn’t bother you, Sundarban can be an experience to remember.
Dolphin watching in Chilika Lake, Odisha
Chilika Lake, Asia's largest brackish water lagoon, is home to the endangered Irrawaddy dolphins. Go on boat tours, and if you are lucky, you may even come across playful dolphins. Chilika is also home to thousands of migratory birds.
Exploring the desert wildlife of the Thar Desert, Rajasthan
For this incredible experience, you will need to visit the Desert National Park. The Thar Desert hosts unique wildlife such as the Indian gazelle (chinkara), desert foxes, and a variety of reptiles and birds like the great Indian bustard. Jeep safaris offer an adventurous way to explore this arid landscape.
Snow leopard tracking in Hemis National Park, Ladakh
Known as the Snow Leopard Capital of the World, Hemis offers guided treks to spot the elusive snow leopard, along with other high-altitude wildlife such as the Tibetan wolf, blue sheep, and Himalayan griffon.
Marine life exploration in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands
These islands offer rich marine biodiversity. Activities include scuba diving and snorkelling to explore coral reefs, swim with exotic fish, and possibly spot marine creatures like sea turtles and manta rays. Explore Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park for this.
Walking safari in Satpura, Madhya Pradesh
Satpura National Park is the only national park where one can go for a walking safari. And that’s possible because, even though it’s a Tiger Reserve, the chance of seeing a tiger in the wild is as rare as they come.
