2017 recorded safest year in history for commercial passenger flights

Thanks to some really positive results revealed in global airline safety statistics, 2017 has been named as the safest year on record for commercial air travel. According to a study done by a Dutch consulting firm and an aviation safety group that tracks airline crashes, 2017 was the year in which the number of accidental deaths recorded by airlines was zero.
An estimation done by the Dutch consulting firm shows that the rate of fatal accidents for large passenger flights is 0.06 per million flights, which simply translates to one fatal accident for every 16 million flights.

Supporting these facts was the Aviation Safety Network which reported that there were no commercial passenger jets in 2017. However, it was also revealed that when all airline incidents were taken into account, including those by cargo planes and commercial passenger turbo prop aircraft, there were a total of 10 fatal accidents that resulted in 44 fatalities onboard and 35 persons on ground.

In comparison to these figures, 2016 was a year which witnessed a total of 16 accidents and 303 deaths among all airliners. So, the final conclusion drawn by the Aviation Safety Network was that the year 2017 was the safest in air travel, both by the number of fatal accidents as well as in the number of fatalities caused by them all.

According to the recorded data, the last commercial aircraft crash that killed more than 100 people took place in Egypt in October 2015.
