Prime Minster Narendra Modi had announced his vision to set up 100 smart cities across the country soon after his government was sworn into power. The 100 smart cities mission intends to promote adoption of smart solutions for efficient use of available assets, resources and infrastructure. A smart city will be equipped with basic infrastructure to give a decent quality of life, a clean and sustainable environment through application of some smart solutions.

As on September 2017, to measure the "quality" and "impact" of various ongoing smart city projects, the Modi government decided to hold a contest carrying total prize money of Rs 50 lakh.

The housing and urban affairs ministry has sent out a concept note and guidelines on 'India Smart Cities Awards Contest, 2017' to all States and Union Territories.

Under the 'Project Awards' category, excellence will be awarded in various categories such as 'Improving Governance', 'Social Aspects', 'Culture and Economy', 'Environment impact', 'Transportation and Mobility' and 'Water and Sanitation'.
