Sharad Pawar

Sharad Pawar is a veteran politician known for his influential role in Maharashtra state politics and the founding of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP). Born on December 12, 1940, in Maharashtra, he has been a prominent figure in Indian politics for several decades.

Pawar's political journey began within the Indian National Congress (INC), where he held various positions, including chief minister of Maharashtra. In 1999, he, along with like-minded leaders, founded the NCP. This marked the birth of a new political force in Maharashtra. The NCP has positioned itself as a regional party with a significant presence in the state's politics.

Under Pawar's leadership, the NCP has been a key player in Maharashtra coalition governments.

In July 2023, Sharad Pawar's nephew Ajit Pawar rebelled against him and joined ruling BJP-Shiv sena government and took oath as deputy chief minister of Maharashtra, majority of NCP's sitting MLAs deserted the party in support of Ajit Pawar. He claimed the ownership of NCP including its name and election symbol. This rebellion resulted in two factions in the party : Sharad Pawar loyalists and Ajit Pawar's supporters, causing a 2022 Shiv Sena-like political crisis for Sharad Pawar.
