A rare sculpture and Kannada inscription have been discovered near the Guttal Chandrashekhara Temple in Haveri, revealing historical insights into a severe famine. The inscription documents marulayya's act of performing final rites for 6,307 unclaimed bodies in 1539 during Achyutaraya's Vijayanagar reign. This find represents the earliest documented evidence of such a devastating famine in the Guttal region.
