HDFC is an Indian banking and financial service with its headquarters in Mumbai. It was tagged as the largest bank in the country in terms of Market Capitalisation as of February 2016.

In December 2016 the Enforcement Directorate (ED) tracked large amount of cash deposits in certain HDFC accounts few daysafter the Modi government announced scrapping of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes. Some of the cash deposits were in the range of Rs 30 crore.
A source said ED officials started survey operations on the Karol Bagh branch on December 9, and found trails of more than Rs 100 crore. Officials are investigating alleged connivance of bank managers in allowing such huge deposits which were then transferred to beneficiaries through the banking channel.
The ED has been tracking the beneficiaries from at least three accounts and further investigation is going on to track other accounts. These accounts are suspected of being 'entry operators' whose role is to open bank accounts in fictitious addresses, deposit huge unaccounted income in cash in these accounts and layer it with circular transactions and delivering it to the beneficiary.
