The Indian rupee plunged to a record low of 95.40 against the US dollar on Tuesday, extending its decline amid escalating Middle East tensions and elevated crude oil prices. This global uncertainty is impacting financial markets, with Indian benchmark indices also trading lower. Analysts anticipate continued pressure on the rupee due to persistent dollar demand and foreign fund outflows.

Technology stocks bore the brunt of the selling. Shares of Infosys, HCLTech, Tech Mahindra and Tata Consultancy Services fell between 2 per cent and 4 per cent after Infosys’ fourth-quarter results failed to meet market expectations.

Stock market today: The BSE Sensex, comprising 30 stocks, advanced 355.90 points, or 0.46 per cent, to close at 77,269.40. During the session, it had surged as much as 997.25 points, or 1.29 per cent, reaching an intraday high of 77,910.75.

Dalal Street concluded the holiday-shortened week with gains, as the combined market valuation of India's top 10 firms surged by Rs 2.20 lakh crore, led by Reliance Industries. Despite a volatile trading environment and mixed global cues, investor sentiment remained resilient, with the BSE Sensex rising 0.32%.

The sell-off was widespread, extending beyond large-cap stocks to the broader market. The Nifty Smallcap 100 index was down 0.5%, while the Nifty Midcap 100 index fell more than 1%.
