Sounding a note of caution, the Reserve Bank said on Friday said there is a risk of high wholesale price inflation (WPI) putting pressure on the retail inflation, albeit with a lag.

US wholesale prices experienced a decline last month, signaling a potential easing of inflationary pressures. The producer price index fell 0.4% from February, with gasoline and egg prices significantly dropping. However, the inflation outlook remains uncertain due to President Trump's proposed trade tariffs on imports, which could potentially drive prices higher.

The WPI mirrored the trend in retail inflation, which slowed to a nine-month low in July due to softening of food and vegetable prices, prompting economists to say RBI may hold interest rates when it reviews monetary policy in October. The RBI had flagged inflationary pressures as a key concern when it raised rates twice.

US wholesale inflation remained unchanged in February, indicating a slowdown, but President Trump’s escalating trade wars with tariffs on steel, aluminium, and various imports may drive higher inflation. Major retailers warn of increased costs leading to reduced consumer spending. The Federal Reserve is expected to maintain its benchmark interest rate unchanged in its upcoming meeting.

US wholesale prices fell 0.5% in March from February, due to a decrease in energy costs, taking the annual growth to 2.7%. The drop in the producer price index, which measures charges by wholesale farmers, manufacturers, and wholesalers, is a sign that inflationary pressures may be easing after the Federal Reserve aggressively raised interest rates.

Wholesale inflation shot up to an eight-month high in October as food prices, particularly vegetables remained firm and manufactured products also hardened, prompting economists to say that rising price pressures may force RBI to hold interest rates.

The wholesale price-based inflation rose to a 9-month high of 1.55 per cent in November on costlier manufactured items, even as food prices cooled. The WPI inflation was 1.48 per cent in October 2020 and 0.58 per cent in November last year.

New Delhi, May 10 () Industrial production in March is likely to grow at 1.9 per cent while deflationary pressure in the wholesale price index will moderate in April data, India Ratings and Research said today.

India's wholesale price inflation dropped to a four-month low of 1.3% in August from July's 2%, driven by reduced prices for fuel, power, and manufactured products. Core inflation fell to 0.7%, and food inflation reached a ten-month low of 3.3%. Retail inflation remained below the Reserve Bank of India's target for the second consecutive month.
