Bhagat Singh was a young Indian freedom fighter, who played a major role in revolutionising India’s Independence movement. He was born into a Jat Sikh family and studied European revolutionary movements that developed in him a penchant towards Marxist ideologies. This brave fighter was executed at the young age of 23 by the British for two of his dramatic violence acts.
He was convicted for taking revenge for the death of Lala Lajpat Rai. Bhagat Singh went ahead to assassinate John Saunders, a British police officer and even escaped the police, who tried to capture him. Soon after, he and Batukeshwar Dutt threw two bombs and leaflets in the Central Legislative Assembly, and surrendered themselves to be arrested.
While in prison, Singh gained mass national support when he initiated a 116-day hunger strike, which is till date the longest strike in the history of the world. He went on a strike with other inmates to demand equal rights that were given to the European political prisoners. During this period, a lot of evidence was brought against him for a conviction in the Saunders case and an appeal to the Privy Council in England was also made. He was later convicted and hanged for his participation in the assassination.
A number of Gandhi supporters disagree with his approach of demanding for mass rights. Singh disregarded Mahatma Gandhi‘s ways of truth and non violence and instead advocated the logic of an eye for an eye.
On March 23, 1931 Singh, along with Shivaram Rajguru and Sukhdev Thapar, was hanged Lahore jail and he was just 23 years old at the time of his death. India observes March 23 as Shaheed Diwas or Martyr's Day on these three young martyrs.
