asiatic lions

The Asiatic lion, also referred as the Indian lion and Persian lion, is a sub specie of the lions living in the Gir forests in Gujarat, India. It is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List because of its small population size.

Since 2010, the lion population in the Gir Forest National Park has steadily increased. In May 2015, the 14th Asiatic Lion Census was conducted over an area of about 20,000 km square; the lion population was estimated at 523 individuals, comprising 109 adult males, 201 adult females and 213 cubs. In August 2017, the Asiatic Lion Census reveals 650 individuals in the wild.

In the heart of Gujarat’s wilderness, a striking imbalance within the Asiatic lion population has captured the attention of researchers and conservationists. While everywhere else in the state, the ratio is one lion to two lionesses, Bhavnagar mainland and coastal region have two for every lioness.

The wait is over. The Mysore Zoo on Sunday said pure asiatic lions from Gujarat have arrived at the conservation centre, thanks to ace cricketer Anil Kumble, the vice chairman of Karnataka wildlife board, who persuaded Gujarat CM Narendra Modi to spare the wild cats for the zoo.

asiatic lions are in high demand in zoos across the globe, and Gujarat being the only abode of the endangered species is at a greater advantage. The exclusivity of the asiatic lions has helped Sakkarbaug Zoological Park in Junagadh get more species and animals in exchange of a few lions.
