Teesta Setalvad

Social activist and journalist Teesta Setalvad is a feminist, who campaigns for the rights of Muslims, Dalits and women. She runs an NGO, Citizens for Justice and Peace for the victims of 2002 Gujarat riots but has been accused of siphoning off money for "personal use" from the donation received by the Centre for riot victims.

The Gujarat Police has told the Supreme Court that Teesta and her husband Javed Anand did not deliver as per promise once the donations to their NGO swelled.

Teesta and her husband were detained in 2014 after an FIR was registered on complaint of the victims of Gulbarg Society, worst-affected area during the Gujarat riots, and are out on bail. The complaint says the couple embezzled funds meant to create a museaum in memory of the riots victim. They are also being probed by the CBI for violations of Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) in connection with donations received by her NGO from abroad.

The HRD Ministry panel claimed that Teesta tried to 'mix religion with politics' in the classroom with young children and spread disharmony among them. She was also charged under Sections 153A and 153B for promoting enimity between groups on grounds of religion.

The SIT filed a chargesheet on Wednesday against social activist Teesta Setalvad, former DGP RB Sreekumar and ex-IPS Sanjiv Bhatt, citing 90 witnesses in support of charges of fabricating evidence to frame 63 persons for a purported "larger conspiracy behind the 2002 riots". Sreekumar and Bhatt are behind bars, while Setalvad has been granted interim bail by the SC in this case.
