In Berhampur, the Gajapati district administration recently declared 594 more villages and 11 panchayats in the tribaldominated district as free from child marriage. The status was accorded after Gajapati collector Lingraj Panda approved the list at Paralakhemundi recently. These villages have been declared as childmarriage free following the fulfillment all criteria laid down by the government to be eligible for the tag. Some of the criteria are no child marriage solemnised in the villages in the last two years, the village-level child protection committee meeting regularly, and the use of the advika app by most adolescent girls. The state government launched advika a special programme to connect adolescent girls with government schemes before a village is declared childmarriage free. The district-level officials working to end child marriage have to visit the village and verify their documents. They also have to discuss it with the villagers.
