Meta and EssilorLuxottica face a multi-billion dollar patent infringement lawsuit from rival Solos Technology. Solos alleges its smart glasses technology was shared with Oakley and EssilorLuxottica employees years ago, and a former MIT researcher brought knowledge of Solos' patents to Meta. The complaint targets the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer Gen 1, claiming ongoing infringement.
Facebook parent Meta and its smart glasses partner EssilorLuxottica are facing a lawsuit from Solos Technology. What Solos said about Meta and EssilorLuxottica infringing its patents

Solos claims that Oakley employees were shown its early glasses technology as early as 2015. Moreover, a former Oakley senior executive later received a commercial pair for testing in 2019, the company added. The complaint also alleges that EssilorLuxottica met with Solos staff throughout 2017 and learnt about the company's ideas and upcoming plans.Regarding Meta, Solos alleges that MIT Sloan Fellow Priyanka Shekar published a 2021 research study titled “Audio Wearable Product Strategy: Expanding User Experience for Solos Smart Glasses” and then brought that knowledge to Meta when she joined the company as a product manager.
Her study mentioned Solos' patents as one of the company's strengths."By the time Meta jointly commercialised smart-glasses products in or around 2021 with EssilorLuxottica, both sides had accumulated years of direct, senior-level, and increasingly detailed knowledge of Solos' smart-glasses technology," the complaint said (as seen by Seeking Alpha).Meta, in partnership with EssilorLuxottica, makes the popular Ray-Ban smart glasses. The company is now also preparing a consumer version of the Orion glasses. However, the Meta Ray-Ban glasses are so popular that the company actually reorganised its XR (Extended Reality) division, Reality Labs, to focus more on similar wearable devices. Now, Meta and EssilorLuxottica are considering doubling production of Ray-Ban glasses to meet growing demand.Solos makes similar products (AI-powered smart glasses) and claims that Meta's patent infringement has cost the company valuable business opportunities. The company even wants to prevent further sales of Ray-Ban smart glasses.
