YouTube Premium Lite in India gets background play and downloads: What it means for users
YouTube has begun rolling out background play and download features to its Premium Lite subscription in India. With this move, the Google-owned streaming platform is expanding the capabilities of the lower-priced membership tier in the country. The company said the update will be gradually introduced over the coming weeks, allowing Premium Lite users to watch most videos ad-free, offline and in the background. Google claimed that the change follows user feedback requesting additional features for the Premium Lite plan. Once the rollout is complete, subscribers in India will be able to access the new features across most video content on the platform.

What these two features mean for Premium Lite users in India

With the update, Premium Lite subscribers in India will be able to play videos in the background on mobile devices while using other apps or when the screen is turned off. The plan will also allow users to download videos and playlists for offline viewing. The subscription tier already allows users to watch many types of video content, including gaming, news, learning, and creator content, without ads. With the addition of background play and downloads, Premium Lite moves closer to the full Premium plan's features, though with certain limitations.Despite the update, Premium Lite does not remove ads from all types of content.
Ads may still appear on music videos, Shorts and during search or browsing on the platform. The new background play and download features will also be unavailable for Shorts or music-related content, such as official music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, or videos containing licensed music from YouTube’s music partners.

How Premium Lite differs from YouTube Premium

The Premium Lite plan offers fewer features compared with the full YouTube Premium subscription. It's important to note that Premium Lite does not include access to YouTube Music Premium, nor does it offer features such as continue watching, jump ahead, queuing, or higher quality audio and video options.YouTube said the full Premium plan remains the option for users who want ad-free viewing across all videos, including music content, along with background play, downloads and access to YouTube Music Premium.Premium Lite has been introduced in several pilot markets, including the United States, Thailand, Germany and Australia. The company said the plan is designed as a lower-priced membership option for users who want to watch most YouTube videos with fewer interruptions.YouTube said it will continue expanding Premium Lite to additional countries and test new features based on user feedback as it develops its subscription offerings.
